Frequently Asked Questions
WHERE DO YOU LIVE AND HOW OLD ARE YOUR KIDS?
We live with our families on a 24-acre farm just outside Portland, Oregon. We each have a daughter who is 4 and a son who is 2.
WHAT DOES ‘SHOW UP AND GROW UP’ MEAN TO YOU GUYS?
To show up and grow up requires a commitment to self-awareness, allowing us to:
Balance everyone’s needs (so no one loses out)
Craft a personal parenting philosophy (so we feel legit and on top of our shit)
Align our ideals with our daily experiences (so we don’t feel inauthentic/guilty)
Understand the why behind our kids’ behavior (so we’re less reactive and more receptive)
Empower us to walk the walk (so we can control less and influence more)
Connect with other parents on their journey (so we learn stuff and feel supported)
Master the mindset of parenting (so we laugh more than we cry/yell)
Build a relationship based on trust and respect (so they’ll come to thanksgiving)
Lean into the big feelings and challenges (so they can resolve)
Become aware of our subconscious baggage (so that our kids won’t have any)
WHAT THE HECK IS A PODCAST AND HOW DO I LISTEN?
The Upbringing podcast is basically our own personal radio show that you can tune into on demand. All you need is a computer or phone to stream our episodes. Some prefer to listen through our website HERE and others prefer to use their phone to subscribe to our station through an application like Itunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, or Google Play. Just open your favorite listening app and search for “Upbringing”, then click “subscribe”. If you find any of this difficult, enlist the help of a friendly younger person or google search. There are so many amazing podcasts to find and listen to! Read more about our episode themes back on the Home Page.
HOW DID UPBRINGING COME ABOUT?
Motherhood was everything we hoped for and nothing we expected. Though we had ‘winged’ just about every new adventure in our lives before beginning families, we quickly realized that when it came to parenting, instinct alone gave us jack shit in terms of navigating daily ups and downs with confidence and success. At times we found ourselves questioning our judgement, wanting to strangle our husbands, and unsure where to focus our energy and attention. It was the wild west. The infinite opinions on the web and in books were often overwhelming, and though we had strong support from friends and family we sometimes felt adrift and lacking. We needed a freaking program.
Luckily, a friend shared the RIE philosophy (Resources for Infant Educarers) and a new world of emotional and practical support opened up to us. We felt crazy relief to discover a framework of related philosophies that felt authentic to us, not to mention strategies that pushed us to examine our intuition, upbringing and cultural beliefs. It became clear that we were on a journey of growth alongside our kids; as we strove to become our best selves, we also began to let go of the expectation to be and do everything perfectly. We were set free!
The idea of creating a podcast to share our conversations was an easy one. All of us struggle to find time to read a book, get on the phone with a friend, browse a website or attend a class. We love podcasts because we can listen when driving, doing dishes, pushing a stroller or sitting in the dark praying our kid will fall asleep. Pods have kept us company and inspired us to grow through hard times -- a lifeline to other voices that could put words to the feelings and experiences we were having.
Upbringing is our attempt to connect with a tribe of parents who value respectful, evidence-based resources and are looking for ways to craft their unique family philosophy. Parents with the courage to dig into the hard stuff, the big picture stuff, the nitty gritty. Parents who can laugh and admit that they (like us) are works in progress, raising themselves alongside their tiny humans.
ARE YOU EXPERTS OR WHAT?
Nope --just mamas on a journey. Our aim is to improve awareness, intention and connection with ourselves and families; we view Upbringing as the public part of that personal adventure. We’ll always be suckers for books and trainings, but our biggest teacher is life, inviting us to stay open, grateful and evolving amidst it all. If any of what we talk about resonates with you, then fantastic. And if not, we wish you the best!

WHAT WAS YOUR LINE OF WORK BEFORE YOU BEGAN UPBRINGING?
After college Hannah taught Spanish + English and eventually worked in a research lab at OHSU, coordinating and conducting neuropsych testing and FMRIs. Kelty worked in web design and branding, eventually beginning her own photography business. Throughout early motherhood and for several years before we worked in tandem as The Weaver House, shooting portraits, spaces, events and products as well as designing websites and print materials for artists and makers. Though parenting and Upbringing have become our main focus, we love diving back in together on passion projects for friends and artists in our circle. Our cameras have become a magical way to connect with other parents and experiences outside our own. We know we’ll be road tripping for fun photo adventures until we’re old and gray.
CAN I HIRE YOU FOR PRIVATE COACHING?
We are focused on coaching ourselves and our small circle for the moment, but we’ll let you know when we feel comfortable extending beyond! In the meantime, we would love you to contribute content to our Dear Upbringing Happy Hour videos -- submit your latest WTF moments or chronic parenting struggles through email or Instagram DM. We look forward to commiserating and sharing our reflections!
WHAT DO YOUR HUSBANDS DO?
Hannah’s husband Alex is a filmmaker and motion graphics artist. He creates videos for small businesses as Quimby and just launched Elements of Film, where he vlogs and sells his film kits to aspiring filmmakers. Alex is also the techie renaissance man who makes us sound legit. He edits and produces our podcast, composes our theme music and ditties, shoots and animates video content and keeps us chuckling through it all. Kelty’s husband Justin runs Working Theory Farm, an organic meat and vegetable farm - also known as our home. Other than keeping us full of smoothies and salads, he sells to local co-ops, grocery stores, upscale Portland restaurants and has just partnered with The Food Bank to grow for them next season.
WHO DOES YOUR ART?
Amber Okamura is our visual interpreter and magic-maker -- the colorful thread that weaves throughout Upbringing. An artist, mother, and kindred spirit, Amber illustrates all of our podcast and website visuals and will continue designing for Upbringing’s videos and print goods. When she isn’t creating beautiful art she can be found spending time with her daughter Juniper, sketching in her notebook or as a Lead Project Manager for Art Content in the Bay Area.
